A dutchman in Madrid

welcome to the costa del Blog.

sunny 36 °C

Hello everybody,

I am René and I have moved from a small town in the south east of the Netherlands to the big city of Madrid in November 2008. My intention for this blog is to tell you about things in Madrid, for people that like me want to live here, but also interesting things for visitors. I am living here for a while so I have some catching up to do on the writing part.

I have moved here to make a new start and for the adventure of living in a different city, a different country and with different people.

Why Madrid? One can ask. Well I met this girl (and no .... it's not a love story that follows.) in the Netherlands a couple of years ago, that was living in Venlo, a little city near to the village where I lived and worked. She had a background in working at a radiostation in the UK, and through the people where she was working asked if she could join the radiostation of Omroep Venlo, where I was working as a volunteer. (more or less running the radio section) of the broadcasting company. After a talk we decided to do the technical part of the radioshow majjem together, and became good friends. In february of 2006 she moved back to Spain, and went to live in Madrid. In the following years I came to Madrid a couple of times, and fell in love with the place. Although I have to say that the first couple of days were a bit strange, as the place is a lot different from the little town where I lived, and different from the big cities I visited before, like London, Berlin or Vienna.

Meanwhile in the Netherlands I did quit my job that I have because I just couldn't be motivated enough to go to work every day, to the same place, with the same people, with the same boring work. I took another job, but in between jobs my thoughts to go to another country took more and more shape. I took a job at UPS at the IBM account, which turned out to be nice, and as well good for the future, as I know work at IBM in Madrid. (but I will tell that story another time.)

On the 25th of November 2008 it was time to leave the Netherlands on a one way ticket, and to start a new life in Madrid. And until now I have to say that it was a good choice. I am enjoying the city, my new friends and my new colleagues a lot.

Sometimes people ask me, if you will stay long, or if I ever want to go back to the Netherlands. My honest answer always is that I don't know. I couldn't imagine moving to Madrid 3 years ago, and I can't imagine where I will be in another 3 years. Of course there are people and things that I miss, but luckily Madrid is a good 6 hour travel (everything included) away from my parents house, so I see them every 3 or 4 months. When I go to visit the Netherlands, my visits are always packed with things like eating out with friends, catching up with friends and have some time off from work to relax. Where will I be in 3 years, I will let you know ... in 3 years. In the meantime enjoy the blog.

Enjoy,

René
